Today, the expansion of Chinese private art museums has become a significant and meaningful cultural phenomenon in the art world. The speed of which the Chinese art industry is being developed, along with its complex relationship with a strict communist government that is paradoxically embracing capitalistic change makes it a truly remarkable event. The art market in China has only been under development for three decades but today it is common to hear of top works by being auctioned to Chinese buyers at astronomical prices. These buyers are creating vast collections and opening their own private art museums in China. These new art museums face unique challenges that stem from unclear laws due to the nascent government regulation in regard to art. They also face challenges stemming from lack of experience of how to operate museums that become successful in a Chinese culture, a culture whose appreciation for art is not as developed as in Western cultures. This paper analyses personal interviews, field trips, and numerous studies of Chinese private art museums, with the aim of allowing Westerners to gain a deeper insight into the Chinese art market and Chinese culture. This paper discusses geographical locations, defines terms that have different subtle cultural meanings, reviews Chinese art history since the 1980s, analyses the background of funders and investors, documents the current Chinese art situation, talks about Chinese tax laws and how they relate to art and contains two interview records of Chinese private art museum directors conducted by this author.
