Despite the significant variety and scale of architectural projects built for the Saudi Arabian government, during the period which Saudi Arabian scholars call Al-tafra (lit., the leap), modern architecture in Saudi Arabia received little attention not only within the historiography of modern architecture broadly, but even within studies of the modern Middle East. This dissertation seeks to respond to this sizeable lacuna within the historiography of modern architectural history by examining the role petroleum played in shaping Saudi Arabia's modern architecture. This is accomplished by studying key projects by four North American architectural firms and examining them against the background of Middle Eastern socio-political development during this period. As such, it also includes debates within the discourse of Modern architecture including issues of regionalism, climate, technology, and monumentality. Most importantly, this dissertation overturns a number of assumptions about modern architecture in Saudi Arabian. Namely, it will be demonstrated that the Saudi Arabian government had a preference for American architectural firms, and that preference was due, in large part, to post-war American foreign policy and the influence of the petroleum industry in Saudi Arabia. Furthermore, this dissertation articulates the importance of the rich and diverse ways in which modernist architecture was interpreted, contested and expressed in Saudi Arabia, as well as how it responded to both the local and regional context.
