Depressive and anxious symptomology often become noteworthy during the adolescent period (Pratt & Brody, 2014). Initial expressions of symptoms may offer a significant point of intervention to alter the developmental trajectory associated with lifelong psychopathology (APA, 2013). Therefore, environmental factors associated with the expression of these symptoms could serve as potential red flags for referrals to mental health providers. They may also serve as important prevention targets (Petrill, Pike, Price, & Plomin, 2004). Research has shown that household chaos is an increasingly relevant psychological construct that can serve as a potential red flag for mental health referrals. Therefore, this project explored potential relationships between common indicators of household chaos and adolescents' self-reported depressive and anxious symptomology. These relationships replicated across two different studies that included multiple locations and developmental stages. The first study used archival adolescent data gathered in schools and primary care clinics by mental health professionals. The second study replicated and expanded the first study in by using an online survey completed by college students. This survey included the same measure of chaos from the first study and added an established measure of household chaos as well as measure of pilot items of household chaos. Regardless of measurement method or household chaos items, household chaos served as a significant and unique predictor of depressive and anxious scores in the regression models. The results of this project contributed to the literature by supporting the associations between household chaos and psychopathology and the importance of multidimensional assessment of household chaos. Furthermore, this study identified key features of household chaos that differ in assessing household chaos from childhood to young adulthood.
