Tennis is a sport in which young players are often supported by coaches and parents; however, there have been instances where increased pressure has produced negative effects on young players. The detrimental effect that pressure from adults can have on young athletes' psychological and emotional development is important to investigate. Thus, this thesis attempts to analyze performance pressure from parents, coaches, and/or umpires that may have a negative effect on junior tennis players who are 18 years old and under. The study was designed to gather information from coaches, players and parents to learn more about this phenomenon and determine if pressure does, in fact, adversely affect young tennis players. Participants were junior tennis players aged 18 and under residing in southern CT. The data collected for this project involved qualitative interviewing. Results showed that this particular sample of players did not experience these negative effects; however, further investigation is needed before this result can be generalized to the overall population of junior tennis participants.
