Three models of meaningful work (Park, 2012; Rosso, Dekas, Wrzeniewski, 2010; Steger & Dik, 2010) were used to inform the current study, which aimed to test the predictors (gratitude, religiosity, and spiritual transcendence) and outcomes (life satisfaction, organizational commitment) of meaningful work. The author recruited a sample of adults working from a university in the Midwest. Participants responded to the Gratitude Questionnaire-6 (GQ-6, McCullough et al., 2002), the Assessment of Spirituality and Religious Sentiments Scale (ASPIRES, Piedmont, 2010), the Work and Meaning Inventory (WAMI; Steger et al., 2012), the Organizational Commitment Scale (Allen & Meyer, 1990), and the Satisfaction with Life Scale (SWLS, Diener, et al., 1985), as well as two supplemental questions regarding respondents' experiences of gratitude at work and how gratitude at work impacts their work meaning. Using SEM and Thematic Content Analysis, the author found there were significant direct effects of gratitude on satisfaction with life, β = .58, SE = .27, p < .001, meaningful work on organizational commitment, β = .59, SE = .15, p < .001, and meaningful work on life satisfaction, β = .16, SE = .18, p = .04, partially supporting the hypotheses. The author also found significant relations among religiosity, spiritual transcendence, gratitude, and meaningful work. Results from Thematic Content Analysis showed respondents experienced gratitude at work and the feeling of gratitude impacted how meaningful they found their work. The findings have implications for counseling and organizational practices as well as future research.
