The researcher pursued research to address the problem of how business intelligence impacts competitive advantage for small to medium enterprises (SMEs). The purpose the of researcher's non-experimental, quantitative study investigated 91 key participants at the manager and director-level; the researcher assessed their perceptions toward the impact of business intelligence on competitive advantage. Using the technology acceptance model (TAM) as a theoretical foundation, the researcher developed non-experimental, quantitative, internet-based questionnaire to determine if there was a relationship between business intelligence and competitive advantage for SMEs based in the United States. The researcher evaluated operationalized variables using partial least squares structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) to address the research premise with significance at p <.05 to present results. There were several hypotheses tested and the researcher's results showed the following: business intelligence did not negatively influence firm performance; organizational performance did not positively impact its competitive advantage; information systems infrastructure positively impacted organizational performance; and lastly, the researcher's results showed that environment conditions did not support the positive impact of business intelligence use on competitive advantage. The researcher also presented several recommendations; however, the replication of this study using a longitudinal approach could yield additional insights of the impact of business intelligence on competitive advantage over time.
