Information Technology projects continue to have issues which can negatively influence organization success. IT projects often are delayed, fail to provide the intended benefits, or are abandoned before the systems are implemented. Many factors may influence whether an IT project is successful, including leadership, technology, budget, organizational culture, and globalization of IT resources. The focus of this quantitative study is on the specific variables of IT leader leadership style and IT leader cultural competence and their relationship to IT project success. IT professionals who are members of the Rocky Mountain Information Management Association, located in Denver, Colorado were asked to rate their IT leader leadership behaviors and cultural competence on a successful IT project. Using the Multifactor Leadership Questionnaire and a cultural competence survey, the study findings examined the types of leader characteristics IT professionals perceived their leaders to have exhibited on successful IT projects. The study findings identify IT professionals perceived their IT leaders as culturally competent when they exhibit transformational leadership style. Finally, the study findings could not identify a significant correlation between IT leader leadership style, leader cultural competence, and IT project success.
