Social engineering attacks on knowledge workers have had a profound effect on the information security of the organization. Pressure exists for effective security defense when trusted employees unintentionally thwart the security of organizational systems. As a step in this direction, this qualitative study used a three-round Delphi design utilizing an expert panel of information security experts to attempt to identify possible solutions to counter social engineering attacks and form a consensus for effective counter defense controls. The study included a set of three rounds. Each round moved the panel closer to consensus, and the last round included textual analysis of open ended questions using NVivo software. The textual analysis helped to produce themes which were triangulated against possible solutions by the panel. The results of the study indicate that participants view a balanced control approach to organizational information security programs as a significant and positive solution to countering social engineering attacks. The results may create an increased understanding of social engineering threat defense and provide leaders with a framework for implementing solutions as best practices to prevent targeted social engineering attacks to the weakest links within the organization.
