Communication is an important aspect of health care. Although barriers to communication exist, written educational material, appropriately designed, can facilitate the transfer of information to a wide variety of audiences. One important factor in the development of patient educational material is the use of simple visuals. Although visuals are known to aid communication, research involving the use of visuals to communicate medical information has produced mixed results. These mixed findings are partially due to the fact that so little research has focused on the development of parameters to guide the development of simple visuals that communicate within a healthcare setting.

This research focused on the use of written medical information regarding self-care for patients discharged with Jackson-Pratt drain in situ. Two simple illustration styles were investigated for their ability to communicate effectively. Patients were randomly assigned the standard written information alone or with one of the two intervention sheets at discharge. During their initial follow-up appointment, participants were interviewed and assessed for adherence to drain care instructions and health literacy.

Data indicated that the intervention materials were able to successfully communicate drain care information to patients discharged with a drain in situ. Adherence, self-efficacy, patient satisfaction and patient use of intervention material were assessed. Additional findings revealed the importance of social support and hint at the possibility of missed care within the health care setting. The results of this study further underscored the need for developing written patient education material to communicate within the healthcare setting. Further research is needed in order to inform patient education curriculum designers regarding the characteristics of simple illustrations that communicate health care information.
