This study's domain resides within creativity and leadership and can be applied across many professions, industries, and organizations. The purpose of this study was to research requirements for development of creative thinking techniques based on 13 creative strengths from Paul Torrance's Tests of Creative Thinking (TTCT). These creative strengths are subsequently pooled with the norm-referenced assessments to provide an overall creativity index and were combined to create six creative techniques for leaders. The research question was: What attributes do leaders reveal through their stories as important for creative techniques that, when used, may spark emotion, imagination, and creativity in the internal world of employees?

This study used the Qualitative Narrative Analysis method that focuses on understanding the data through the lens of narrative as an attempt to generate a more holistic picture of the phenomenon. The participants wrote a story about a real life problem, embellished it, and developed a creative solution. General observation was that the pool of participants, however small, was highly diverse in age, industry, and level within the organization.

Chief findings: (a) Organizational challenges related to silos and barriers created disconnection and lack of trust. (b) Conflicting and strong emotions and feelings were encountered; creating a need for leader to overcome those feelings before a breakthrough to a creative solution. (c) Creative attributes emerged from the stories.

The research was important in that it highlighted a concept called emotional imagination that addresses the need to integrate rigid, data-driven leadership with creative open leadership driving the use of imagination as a function developed in everyone while creating an ecosystem for organizational creativity. Future research on creativity and imagination at work for leaders should include diversity, the future of work, entrepreneurial employees and further exploration of leader and member emotions regarding creativity.
