Partnerships between institutions of higher education will become increasingly common in the near future. Because of this, there is a need to better understand how leadership influences these partnerships through the creation and implementation stages. This qualitative case study examined the perspective of leaders in an educational partnership between a research university and a local community college in New Jersey through the use of semi-structured interviews. The results relating to the creation of the partnership yielded several primary themes including the role of leadership relating to context, communication, and vision, and secondary themes including timing, perception, feedback, buy-in, and persistence. The results relating to the implementation of the partnership yielded additional primary themes of the impact of leadership on communication, culture, and resources, with secondary themes of mutual trust, adaptation, and personnel.
