The purpose of this qualitative phenomenological study was to explore how funeral directors in Maryland described their lived experiences and use of coping strategies associated with burnout. Two research questions provided guidance for this phenomenological study: How do funeral directors describe their lived experiences with burnout; and How do funeral directors describe their lived experiences using coping strategies to manage burnout? To develop and learn about the lived experiences, semi-structured interviews were utilized to collect in-depth experiences from the 12 participants. The transactional model of stress and coping by Lazarus and Folkman (1984) is a theoretical foundation used to identify the processes of coping and managing stressful situations, and Freudenberger's (1974) theory on burnout. The phenomenological data analysis used van Kaam's method. The ten prevalent themes described the lived experiences of funeral directors: (a) experiences with death, (b) involvement with psychological trauma, (c) negative emotional attachments, (d) external stressors, (e) occupational stressors, (f) experiencing career fulfillment, (g) description of coping strategies, (h) description of communication strategies, (i) describing coping strategies for enjoyment, (j) description of variables influencing work/life balance. This research study may influence future generations by acting as a guide to improve the funeral director occupation. Additionally, more research is needed that observes the needs of this understudied segment of the funeral profession, specifically, the funeral director.
