The purpose of this quantitative study was to determine if a correlation existed between spiritual development and length of time in sobriety in men enrolled in abstinence-based treatment for chemical dependency. A cross-sectional quantitative method of data collection and interpretation was used to study specific spiritual traits of men achieving measurable success in their recovery. Participants consisted of 110 men ranging from 1 day sober to 375 consecutive days sober. Participants were enrolled in 1 of 3 programs at Ohlhoff Recovery Programs, an abstinence-based, non-profit treatment organization located in San Francisco, California. Participants were placed into 2 groups: < 30 days sober and ≥ 30 days sober. Data were collected via self-report surveys including a demographic questionnaire and 2 measures of spirituality: (a) the Functional Assessment of Chronic Illness Therapy-Spiritual Version, Extended and (b) the Spiritual Well-Being Scale. Findings showed a significant positive correlation between participants with ? 30 days sober and higher scores on both measures of spirituality and all 4 subscales (Meaning in Life/Peace, Faith, Religious Well-Being, and Existential Well-Being). There was no significant correlation between identifying as spiritual and/or religious and higher scores on the Existential Well-Being subscale. Findings can benefit chemical dependency treatment programs, individual clinical treatment providers, community members in sober support groups (including Alcoholics Anonymous sponsors, members, etc.), as well as friends and family members of persons attempting to get sober by proving specific information on how to support persons early in recovery using spiritual principles. Future research might add to the body of knowledge by expanding the diversity of the population sampled (including time sober, gender, religious/spiritual identification, etc.); exploring the relationship of time sober and scores on the subscales by using a longitudinal research design; and studying data on clients engaged in alternative treatment programming, including harm reduction and community support groups.
