This study analyzed online narratives from health travelers to India and described the themes of their experiences. This study is a qualitative research study based on narrative analysis from Creswell's (2013) qualitative approach. One of qualitative research's main goals is to tell the researchers how and why things happen as they do (Blumberg, Cooper, & Schindler, 2011). The main findings of this study identify patients' impressions on the care they received in India. The concept behind this work originated from the recommendations for future research section of Ozan-Rafferty's 2013 dissertation, which focused on health travelers to Turkey.

This study is a qualitative research study based on narrative analysis from Creswell's (2013) qualitative approach. For the purposes of this paper, the terms medical tourism and health traveler are used interchangeably and define instances when a patient travels across international borders to obtain medical care. In most cases, the medical tourist travels from a developed country to a developing country (Reddy, 2013). These medical tourism treatments may range from highly invasive heart surgeries to less invasive procedures, such as dental work or wellness treatments. Availability, costs, and expertise are a few primary drivers of medical tourism (Lunt, Horsfall, & Hanefeld, 2016).

So providers can know what health travelers like and do not like, this research assumes its findings will help providers who service current and future medical tourists. In addition, the findings can be used to assist in decision making for patients considering health travel, and the results may strengthen health administration education by providing general insights on the medical tourism process (Ozan-Rafferty, Johnson, Shah, & Kursun, 2014). Lastly, this study's outcomes may lead to the start of more internet communities focused on improving medical tourism or capturing more solid statistics regarding medical tourists.

The primary question to be answered with this research was: What can we learn about health travelers to India through analysis of their online narratives? Additional sub-questions were: (a) What are the primary reasons patients in the examined narratives traveled to India for care? (b) What can be derived from the narratives regarding medical tourists' satisfaction with the outcome and the result of their treatment they received in India? (c) What are some positive and negative factors influencing medical tourists' perceptions and overall experiences about their health travel to India? and (d) What are the characteristics of medical tourists who write online narratives regarding their health experiences in India?

Publicly available narratives written by medical tourists to India were obtained using the Google web search engine. At the conclusion of the data collection process, 53 narratives were deemed eligible for analysis. Of those 53, six were blog posts. The 47 remaining narratives were from a discussion thread.

The analysis process was comprised of initial open coding conducted on the narratives to create initial codes and identify common themes, with a focus on the initial research question and sub-questions (Ozan-Rafferty et al., 2014). The content of each sentence was examined to identify positive and negative opinions (O'Leary, 2011). NVivo (coding software) was used to identify relationships with the various initial themes (Ozan-Rafferty et al., 2014). Finally, an additional researcher, approved by the dissertation committee, reviewed eight cases to confirm the major themes identified by the initial researcher.

Per the results, most of the medical tourists were happy with the overall experience of receiving care in India. The most popular contributors to the patients' satisfaction were low costs, good customer service, and services being offered that were unavailable in the patient's home country. Many even encouraged others to explore the possibility of receiving care in India. When negative feedback was provided, it concentrated on the overall environment of India being crowded/unorganized, noisy, and not very sanitary.

By answering the research questions, this study identifies patients' impressions regarding care they received in India. The methodology used can be applied to not only study medical tourism in different countries, but it can be used to analyze multiple types of experiences captured in online narratives.
