Theologians have recognized that prayer in all its forms is a primary concern and tool for discipleship among all ages. This is something that is to be nurtured and taught in both corporate forms and individual discipline in both worship and pastoral ministry. Prayer and spiritual maturity among older adults is a primary need according to recent research in developmental psychology. Pastoral ministry does not always focus on this age group in spiritual disciplines for various reasons to the detriment of the spiritual maturity of all age groups as older adults are not only mentors but a key factor in the faith development of younger adults and youths. This study examined the impacts of an intentional focus on prayer life in pastoral visitations with the older adults in a local congregation. Through a combination of interviews and short surveys, the study found that attention to prayer life by those conducting pastoral visitation gave both opportunity for older adults to see more deeply and grow their own spiritual maturity and equipped the saints with spiritual disciplines and community building skills that in turn impacted positively the whole congregation.
