Thesis (Psy.D.)--University of Hartford, 2018.
This effort addresses the unique needs of female spouses providing care for their husbands who have been diagnosed with Alzheimer's or other dementias. Although women are, overall, more likely to develop Alzheimer's disease, current research indicates that women are nevertheless more likely to act as a spousal caregiver within heteronormative relationships. Here, I review the social, economic, and health costs and benefits related to caregiving. In addition, I explore mindfulness and mindfulness-based approaches as possible interventions used to help improve resilience amongst female spousal caregivers. My focus includes an evaluation of the degree to which four well-researched mindfulness-based approaches (Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction, Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy, Dialectical Behavioral Therapy, and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy) might meet the needs of female spousal caregivers. I then present a self-guide for mindfulness practices designed specifically for female caregivers that is based on an evaluation of the literature.
