Thesis (M.A.)--Notre Dame de Namur University, 2018.
The older adult population is expanding at a rapid rate and the mental health field is currently underprepared for the needs of this growing community. Using Erikson's psychosocial theory, this research aims to provide further forms of support for older adults to achieve Erikson's concept of ego integration and as a result, increase well-being and successful aging in older adults. The researcher hypothesized that art therapy doll making would prompt reminiscence and provide older adults aid in well-being and successful aging. Twelve women, between the ages of 65 and 79, met in groups of four and participated in a one-time art therapy doll making session. This study included both qualitative and quantitative data analysis. The Tripartite Model of Reminiscence Functions developed by Cappeliez & O'Rourke (2006) was used to measure participant's reminiscence at the conclusion of the art therapy doll making session. The results of the study supported the hypothesis that art therapy doll making prompts reminiscence. Additional results of the study included an increase in social connection between participants, and a meaningful connection participants' expressed towards their handmade dolls and in working with textile materials used in the doll making.
