Thesis (Ed.D.)--Northcentral University, 2018.
This qualitative study addressed the perceptions of Third Culture Kids concerning their natal faith upon repatriation to their home country. The purpose of the study was to increase understanding of the problems Third Culture Kids encounter and the coping mechanisms they use when returning to their home country. Six participants were interviewed to gain first-person insight into their experiences both in their host country and upon repatriation to the United States after their foreign placement. The participants were over the age of 18 and had returned to the United States within the past five years. The data were collected through interviews and analyzed using NVivo 11, a data analysis software, to determine the themes generated from the interviews. Themes emerged related to challenges, changes, feelings, and increased strengths in faith. Themes also emerged regarding coping methods such as reliance on faith, outlet/activity to deal with emotions and feelings, professional therapy or counseling, finding a mentor, and attending a reentry seminar. Themes around challenges, changes, and feelings were: loneliness/lack of belonging, facing challenges upon repatriation, feeling labels, stereotypes, judgement, feeling different, and difficulty making friendships upon repatriation. Positive themes centered around increased strengths were the importance of a Third Culture Kid network, embracing a Third Culture Kid identity, and the significance of diversity. Implications of the study include a need to increase appropriate supports to alleviate the problems and concerns associated with TCK repatriation. Recommendations for future study include exploring these themes further using a larger participation sample.
