This study explores the use of graphic organizers to write and essay based on expository texts. Comprehension of the curriculum was measured through assessments for each lesson. Each lesson consisted of a different skill needed to write a complete essay. A pre and post test was used to identify what the students knew at the start of the lesson and how much they progressed by the end. This study was conducted in a STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) for fifth graders in a suburban school. The group included 19 students, all of which were included in this study. The results indicated that students scored higher on their post-assessments and learned more through the use of graphic organizers. Students gained a higher understanding of the curriculum when graphic organizers had been used. The results proved that students are more inclined to write a better essay when they are using graphic organizers.
