Thesis (M.A.)--Pacifica Graduate Institute, 2017.
From emperor to artist, each life tells a story. In the treatment of trauma this work explores the healing potential inherent in personal narrative. Through the process of organic inquiry, the treatment of psychological trauma is considered from an artistic perspective. The author reflects on five personal narratives, discovering in each a psychological analogy to the elements and principles applied in creating art. The thesis reviews literature that illuminates the relationship between creativity and healing, presents mythological motifs as metaphors of initiation and transformation, and articulates the power of story as symbolic language in accessing and processing the story of grief, pain, and trauma held in the body. It illustrates the potential for medicine to present itself through story in the form of insight, lessons, and fresh outlook and provides suggestions for working with personal narrative from a depth psychological perspective in clinical practice.
