This study involved a recent topic of financial literacy education among native Hawaiians. Evidence shows that this group of people falls into lowest level category of economic literacy in the nation. Financial literacy through financial socialization exacerbates this problem when not gaining financial literacy from the public educational institutions in Hawaii. The purpose of this basic qualitative study was to understand the perceptions and attitudes of native Hawaiians on their experiences of financial socialization towards their financial literacy acumen. The two research questions of this study were, 1. What are the perceptions and attitudes towards the effectiveness of gaining financial literacy outside the public education system through financial socialization?, 2. What are the perceptions about the adequacy on learning financial literacy through financial socialization outside the public education system through financial socialization? Six participants in this study were between the ages of 21 and 79, they were part native Hawaiian and graduates of a public high school on the island of Maui. This study conducted face-to-face interviews. During the data analysis of the findings the raw data was organized and subsequently inductive coding was used to identify key themes. These themes were then used to answer the research question. The key findings of this study demonstrated that native Hawaiians were well aware of financial literacy and perceived financial socialization as an effective means to learn financial literacy. In addition, participants perceive themselves as not being prepared adequately in terms of financial literacy by the time they graduated high school. A community already having low aptitude in financial literacy and learning through financial socialization in the same community creates an interlocking determinant in the literacy of native Hawaiians adults and native Hawaiian children. Further studies should be considered in this topic, and could examine in greater detail the level or aptitude of financial literacy of Hawaii high school students who are in their final year to graduate from a public high school in Hawaii. Another opportunity for further research would be to conduct research on a large sample size in Hawaii using the same research methods.
