Thesis (Ph.D.)--Cardinal Stritch University, 2018.
The purpose of this phenomenological study is to examine the entrepreneurship gap between African Americans and Caucasians in the city of Milwaukee, and how entrepreneurship can be fostered through examining the lived experiences of African American entrepreneurs. The application of McClelland's (1961) Human Motivation Theory and Joseph Schumpeter's (1983) Innovation Theory comprise the theoretical frameworks used to guide this qualitative study. The Human Motivation Theory asserts individuals are motivated by either the need for achievement, the need for affiliation, or the need for power. The Innovation Theory asserts that innovation is at the center of economic change (1983).

This qualitative study utilized the criterion-based sampling technique and the snowball sampling technique to identify participants who had experienced the phenomenon of African American entrepreneurship in Milwaukee. A semi-structured, conversational interview format was used, which led to qualitative inquiry, combined with pre-determined questions that were open-ended in nature. Semi-structured, conversational interviews are advantageous to the research as it enhances the provision of valuable information from the participants' context of experience. The implications of the research results provided conclusions regarding participants' experiences as African American entrepreneurs in Milwaukee via ways in which entrepreneurship can be fostered, motivational factors of entrepreneurs, and characteristics of entrepreneurs. The lived experiences which shaped the entrepreneurs' desire to pursue entrepreneurship and what's necessary to stay the course, resulted in 10 emergent motivational factors, characteristics of entrepreneurs, and ways in which entrepreneurship can be fostered. These are: (a) help within the business; (b) networking; (c) continued education; (d) support system; (e) family influence/ legacy; (f) autonomy; (g) passionate and motivated; (h) patient and consistent; (i) resilient; and (j) faith based.
