The purpose of the study is to expand and magnify our awareness of the power of music to heal those suffering from debilitating diseases such as Alzheimer's. Leopold Stokowski said, "Music is like a dynamic sun in the center of a solar system which sends out its rays and inspiration in every direction...it makes us feel that the heavens open and a divine voice calls." And, his beautiful hope in fulfillment states, "Something in our souls responds and understands" (1988, p. 117).

My hope has been to discover, through an ethnographic research approach, whether we could improve our comprehension of the spiritually transforming aspects of music with dementia residents in care centers and possibly, just possibly, we could realize something in our souls---and theirs---responding and understanding.

I have held a belief-concept that there is a deep spiritual consciousness that can be reached through music---even with late-stage Alzheimer's conditions---when there is no functioning cognitive awareness. This study is about the discovery of that consciousness-strata below the surface of that cognitive-cellular-deterioration. Several residents in the Woodcliff Lake Manor Care Center participated in this study. Interviews were held with staff, families of the residents, and the residents themselves. The study is about the "stories" of those residents and their response to music, their awakening to the soul within.

Some bright themes emerged from this study. We found that music helped residents rediscover their youthful joy; music created deeper relationships for the residents, and it improved their self-esteem. The most moving finding, however, was the connection that music made with a late-stage Alzheimer's resident near death. We were able to take music into that consciousness-strata below the cognitive deterioration and find a whisper of a soulfulness there that gave us a spiritually transforming moment. The sheer beauty of the moment confirmed for us the joyful awareness of a heaven's opening and a soul's transcendent understanding.

I see the need for studies that focus on touch with music to increase the healing impact that music can have on the elderlies in nursing homes. Research should follow on the discovery of a deep consciousness through music with late-stage Alzheimer's residents. A third implication is the impact that music can have to improve healing within the family, especially with dementia residents. Music with the dying needs intensive research. We have just touched on its value.
