This dissertation develops a rigorous metaphorological reading of Goethe's scientific and literary texts. Departing from the category of "Fortgepflanztes" in Goethe's collection of morphological writings (Hefte zur Morphologie, 1817), the dissertation contemplates Goethe's dilemma of defining not only the origin and development of organic life, but also the discipline of morphology itself as a language by which morphology is to be defined in the first place. For the metaphor "Fortgepflanztes" stands on the threshold between the objects and language of morphology. It thus expresses the dilemma of what the philosopher Hans Blumenberg calls "Unbegrifflichkeit" (unconceptionality) of language in relation to a quasi-theological moment of an origin that marks not only a genesis of plants and animals but at the same time the beginning of morphology as a modern scientific discipline. Along with this "Unbegrifflichkeit" with regard to morphological origins, the dissertation poses the question of the role and functioning of metaphors in general. For the tectonics of metaphorical language are not only at work in the representation of origins in Goethe's morphology (such as shown in chapter 1), but they can also be traced along such relevant literary works as Die Wahlverwandtschaften (1809), Faust II (1831), and the collection of Sonette (1815/27). For this purpose, the dissertation carefully demonstrates how these aspects around the "Unbegrifilichkeit" of metaphorical language structurally correspond to figurative aspects of literary language, such as repetition (Wahlvenvandtschafien, chapter 2), rhyme ( Faust II, chapter 3), and form (Sonette, chapter 4).
