Building a profitable and sustainable business is a complex endeavor filled with uncertainty, complicated situations and difficult decisions. Tradecraft is the easy part. People know how to use their skills to deliver a service. They fail when it comes to turning those skills into money. A segment of small business owners exists in entrepreneurial poverty, a condition where they are not generating enough profit to live the lifestyle of their choice. The cause is neither lack of capital nor management skill, it is more basic than that. It is lack of proficiency in business fundamentals.

520 $a Presently there is no consensus on basic business fundamentals. Every skill-based activity has fundamentals on which training programs are based, but ask any business owner to name the basic business fundamentals and you will get as many different responses as the number of people you ask.
520 $a The aim of this exploratory sequential mixed methods study is to discover teachable business fundamentals that enable small business owners to purposefully achieve profitability and in the process find a way out of entrepreneurial poverty.
520 $a Current small business support programs provide options that are actionable only if the business is generating sufficient revenue. "Sufficient revenue" is an assumption that does not reflect reality. A 2014 study by Sorensen and Sharkey found that many small business owners earn less money from their businesses than they would have earned had they kept a job. (Sorensen & Sharkey, 2014).
520 $a This project extends work on effectuation by Dr Saras Sarasvathy. In business school, Dr Sarasvathy perceived that concepts being taught in several courses were based on the assumption that firms exist as fully functioning entities from the start. Realizing that this assumption did not reflect her reality, Dr Sarasvathy tested a group of successful entrepreneurs to discover factors that led to the establishment of a firm. The question she answered was "How do firms come to be?" (Sarasvathy, 1998) This research project set out to answer the question "How do firms come to be profitable?".
