Metaphors play an important role in counseling as tools for communicating emotions and ideas. Counselors using metaphors in multicultural settings, however, run the risk of misunderstandings that can impede therapeutic progress. The purpose of this quantitative, correlational study was to investigate to what extent, if any, metaphor preferences and intercultural communication effectiveness predict multicultural counseling knowledge and awareness among professional counselors in Kentucky. Conceptual metaphor theory and multicultural counseling theory served as the theoretical foundation for the study. The sample consisted of 107 current, active members of the Kentucky Counseling Association. Instruments consisted of the Metaphor Usage Measure, the Effectiveness in Intercultural Communication Questions, and the Multicultural Counseling Knowledge and Awareness Scale. Multiple regression results indicated that intercultural communication effectiveness predicted multicultural knowledge, r(107) = .334, p < .001. The tendency to use metaphors did not predict intercultural communication effectiveness, multicultural counseling knowledge, or multicultural counseling awareness in the sample. The results suggest that multicultural knowledge contributes to effective intercultural communication. The study concludes with a recommendation for greater focus on metaphors in counseling education, research and practice, particularly with regard to their use in multicultural settings.
