Thesis (M.A.)--Fashion Institute of Technology, State University of New York, 2018.
This paper reviews the current state of art fairs and the issues that they bring up within the art community. With the number of fairs growing each year, the need for reform is necessary to create a better future for not only the fairs themselves, but for the communities they intend to serve. In order to better understand how art fairs have turned into the lavish events that they are now, it was imperative to look into the past and the changes that have occurred over the decades. Examining the first fair, Art Cologne, and how it has managed to survive over 50 years paved the way for the research illustrated in this text. Factors that are challenging fairs today that are discussed include the impact of capitalism on the arts, successes and failures of different fair brands, the cost for all involved parties to participate in these events, influences outside the art market that are impacting the fairs and efforts to change the art fair model. The research examined in this paper leads to the conclusion that actions are being taken to change the ways in which we see the fairs today. With alternatives to the business model and initiatives to rework their structures to make them better suited to the art world, it is apparent there is a future for the concept of art fairs.
