Thesis (Ed.D.)--Wingate University, 2018.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the impact sports participation has on student achievement among three middle schools in the rural northeastern region of South Carolina. The sample consisted of Grade-Eight participants (54 student-athletes and 54 non-athletes). The researcher employed a mixed-methods, sequential, explanatory design to answer the research questions. In the first phase, quantitative data were collected using Measures of Academic Progress (MAP) to investigate the impact sports participation has on student achievement. A t-test analysis was used to compare the mean scores of student-athletes and non-athletes. The results confirmed that there was a "statistically significant" difference in Reading and Math scores for student-athletes when compared to non-athletes. In the second phase, teachers completed a survey that included seven Likert scale items and four open-ended questions. The researcher conducted a thematic analysis based on the results of the open-ended survey questions. The data revealed teamwork, self-discipline, and leadership were the most impactful components of sports participation. Furthermore, in order to improve learning, the researcher suggests all students should be moving towards developing teamwork, self-discipline, and leadership skills at the middle school level. The findings support the claim that sports participation has a positive impact on student achievement and the total development of student-athletes. However, additional research is recommended to investigate the impact sports participation have on variables such as discipline, attendance, and a larger sample size.
