The period that we commonly refer to as Modernism, in terms of art history, was filled with an abundance of movements of varying styles. Amongst these movements were Impressionism, Cubism, Expressionism, and Dada just to name a few. Within each of these movements the artists sought new approaches to expressing their chosen content. Frank Stella's Black Paintings from the late 1950's to early 1960's were another limb on the tree of Modernism. As this thesis will prove, Stella's series of work was very formally and theoretically innovative for its time and influenced future artists to come. The research for this project has taken into account works of art that came before and after Stella's Black Paintings in order to show the ways in which the paintings themselves were remarkable.
