Women-owned businesses contribute significantly to the United States (US) economy by way of job creation and economic growth. But in most cases, growth is contingent upon business owners receiving adequate financing. The problem is that women make up 55% of all new businesses in the US but receive only 2% in external financing. As a result, women business owners are impacted by this low percentage as the failure rate is attributed to the lack of adequate resourcing to include social capital to support their businesses. The concept of Social Capital, more specifically the financial capital, of women-led business owners, remain a topic of interest among the entrepreneurship literature. Therefore, a qualitative research study was conducted as a way to explore the personal networking ties of women-led firms. The researcher used the Resourced-Based View (RBV) framework to guide the research. The RBV framework provided an intimate look at each of the participants' competitive advantages within their industry and how obstacles such as access to credit impeded the pursuit of adequate financing. The researcher conducted semi-structured face-to-face interviews among a purposeful sample of 10 women-led entrepreneurs. The purpose of the research was guided by research questions which sought data related to social networks, social media, the relationships between business owners, financial institutions, and investors. Data collection was sorted using a coding level process to identify repeated themes that identified how selected internal and external variables related to the social networking influenced the availability of financial capital. Results of the qualitative study support previous research and suggest that social ties and networks have a positive influence on a business and the ability to access the availability of external capital. This study will extend the field of female entrepreneurship research and inform future researchers on lived experiences impacted by the challenges in access to credit for small business owners.
