Thesis (D.C.S.)--Colorado Technical University, 2019.
You have an idea, and you're told that you should get it patented so that no one can replicate, and profit from it. How valuable is an idea? Is it worth venturing forward to get a registered patent? Does a patent prohibit others "from using, making, and or selling" throughout the United States? The phenomenological research proposed within this study examined innovators who have undergone the entire patenting process and have obtained a computer science related patent from their idea. The topic was the foundation for the research question, which in-turn helped to produce the conceptual framework. The population for this study encompassed on engineers, data and computer scientist. The geographical location of the participants that were selected resided from within the United States. The interviews included eight experienced patent holders within diverse fields. To maintain the anonymity of each participant, pseudonyms were utilized. The pseudonyms of P1, thru P13, were used to differentiate each participant. The modified Van Kaam technique was applied to analyze the data that were collected during the interviews. From the data collected four themes were identified; which were, (a) The cost to have an idea patent is exceptionally pricey, (b) The entire process is very time consuming, (c) There is a limited amount of security or control, and a great deal of deceitfulness, and (d) Biased legal commitments. There were also two contradictory themes which also emerge during the data analysis, (i) Positive impact---would promote patenting an idea, and (ii) Negative impact---would not promote patenting an idea.
