This study employs the Insight approach to conflict analysis and resolution to answer the following question: What led formerly radicalized Indonesians to change their minds about engaging in acts of violence and terror to achieve their goals? This study focuses on former radicals from West Java, a center of terrorist activity in Indonesia. The investigator employed an interview protocol based on the Insight approach to interview 19 former Indonesian radicals, some of whom are still in prison for their acts, including the Bali bombing. The interviews were conducted in Indonesian. The investigator then selected ten of these interviews for analysis. These ten interviews were transcribed and translated into English. The study traces each of these ten individuals' journeys from the decision to engage in violence to the decision to renounce it. These individuals used violence in efforts to aid oppressed Muslims, establish an Islamic state, and to seek justice for their fellow Muslims. The study discovered that while their aims did not change substantially, their subsequent evaluations of the religious integrity and effectiveness of their use of violence did. The study offers a cautionary note regarding the claims for success made by the proponents of the government-run terrorist disengagement program in Indonesia.
