Thesis (M.A.)--National University of Singapore (Singapore), 2017.
This thesis attempts to contribute to the discourse on Singapore's Indian heritage. It foregrounds the Government's appreciation of the critical role which Indian heritage could play in fostering multicultural citizenship from the early years of Self-Government. The thesis also analyses the historical narratives and representational strategies employed by Singapore's 'Heritage Institutions' such as the National Museum of Singapore (NMS), the Asian Civilisations Museum (ACM) and the Indian Heritage Centre (IHC). It critically appraises these heritage institutions' attempts at exhibiting the diversity inherent in the 'Indian community' which cut across cultural and class boundaries. However, it underscores the imprint of the 'Authorised Heritage Discourse' (AHD) evident in the practices of these institutions and the limitations it poses towards representing the diversity in the 'Indian community'. Further, this thesis advocates the need to inculcate a culture of collaboration and co-creation that may help engender a sustainable multi-vocal discourse on Singapore's Indian heritage.Subjects--Topical Terms:
