There are many options to define the water quality. This research conducts two main assessments, visual habitat assessment and benthic macro invertebrate assessment, to estimate water quality.

Using two assessments and GIS data, the Lamington River sub-watershed and the North Branch sub-watersheds, in Raritan River Basin of New Jersey, were studied. The assessments indicated a range of results for both sub-watersheds.

In addition, this research found that land use changes in the study area mostly resulted in additional developed area. Regression analysis indicates that there is strong relationship between visual habitat quality and developed area and undeveloped area. Specifically, data demonstrate that the high percentage of undeveloped area (forest) is related to higher water quality in the assessment scores. Finer scale study of land use in a 300 foot stream buffer also indicates development is proceeding more slowly near the stream than in the watershed as a whole.
