Thesis (M.A.)--Northeastern Illinois University, 2017.
The English present perfect structure, have + past participle, is among the most confusing concepts for both ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) learners and teachers. The confusion stems from the many uses of the present perfect, the complexity of linguistic analyses and unclear presentations of definitions of the present perfect in ESL (English as a Second Language) textbooks. In this thesis, I propose a broad definition of the present perfect based on an event timeline which comprises four senses of the present perfect that were originally introduced by McCawley (1971) and which have been influential in the ESL field. Also, I test the usefulness of the approach for ESL purposes through a survey.

My goals are twofold. First, I argue the validity of this approach with a semantic analysis of the present perfect. I integrate the analyses of McCawley (1971) and others (Comrie 1971, Huddleston and Pullum 2002) with Bennett and Partee (1972) and others (Smith 1978, Inoue 1979) to project a time boundary around the moment of speaking that may include past events that are relevant to the moment of speaking. Visually, the time boundary amounts to an expanded or shrunken circle around a point that corresponds to the moment of speaking. My analysis is consistent with various points made by the above authors. Second, I test the practical acceptability of my approach through a survey of ESL teachers and others in the TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) field. The survey indicates that TESOL-related respondents find my analysis comprehensible and practically useful for pedagogical purposes. Finally, I also point to further research to test the application and effectiveness of my broad definition of the present perfect in textbook and classroom settings.
