My dissertation, Made with Words: Textual Virtuality in Modernism , examines the development of textual virtuality in the experimental writings of Gertrude Stein, T.S. Eliot, and Mina Loy. Today, the term virtual is often associated with virtual reality or cyberspace, and the existing scholarship on the virtual in modernism considers it through the advance of new technologies at the turn of the twentieth century. However, the early twentieth century had been fascinated with the virtual as potential in the lineage of Aristotle, who refers to the seed as already potent with the virtual corn within itself. I argue that this interest in the virtual took a textual turn with modernist writers who tried to capture the image as movement, rather than the image of movement. Drawing upon Bergson's and Deleuze's theorization of the virtual, my dissertation delineates how the experimental writings of Stein, Eliot and Loy each virtualize language, exploring the potency and fluidity of language to keep the text open and withholding it from being actualized into definitive meanings.

My dissertation, Made with Words: Textual Virtuality in Modernism , examines the development of textual virtuality in the experimental writings of Gertrude Stein, T.S. Eliot, and Mina Loy. In my chapters, I draw attention to the radical formal experiments of Stein, Eliot, and Loy, which virtualize language. In Chapter 2, I explore how Stein dissociates language, manipulates syntax and uses language in a suggestive manner in Tender Buttons to turn words into virtual entities that exist in excess of their literal meanings. I also present how planes of textual virtuality in Stein's Four Saints in Three Acts and Stanzas in Meditation move beyond telic or cyclic time or homogenous space, but remain n-dimensional in time and space. In Chapter 3, I redefine Eliot's "fragmented" forms in The Waste Land and his use of absurd juxtapositions as plastic and virtual entities that create meaning through their relationships. Eliot's use of negations and the word "nothing" in The Waste Land transcends Aristotelian syllogisms or Hegelian dialectics, and forces language to remain virtual by simultaneously negating and evoking images. Loy, in poems such as "Partuition" and Songs to Joannes , which I consider in Chapter 4, uses blank space, dashes, and punctuation in her poetry to invite the outside (virtual) into the interior of the text. In her autobiographical writings including "Pazzarella," and her poem Songs to Joannes, Loy confronts the interdependent interactions between self and other, in a quest to find a feminine self that is open and fluid, yet not subsumed by the outside that already exists inside the self. With virtualized language, the three writers create planes of textual virtuality in their literary practices, which remain open, fluid, and amorphous before being actualized into meaning. Through these readings, I aim to present an open, fluid, and expansive understanding of modernism rather than one of fragmentation and digression.
