Although the need for mental health services exists, Vietnamese Americans have not utilized these services until issues became severe and all alternative resources have been sought (Kim-Zane, 2015; Nguyen & Lee, 2013). This study looked at spiritual leaders as alternative resources when it came to mental illness and distress. 12 interviews were conducted with nine Buddhist Monks/Nuns and three Mediums to understand their views, attributions of mental illness, and alleviation. Understanding these views informs practitioners of the cultural influences that may be a barrier toward serving the Vietnamese American community. This study contributes implications for practitioners to provide services for Vietnamese Americans. It also reframes cultural barriers by helping providers understand and accept attributions that are considered important.
