This exploratory qualitative study explored the role of emotional intelligence within virtual experiential learning group work in introductory management courses. Researchers extensively studied emotional intelligence related to management skills and academic success. However, a gap in the literature existed regarding emotional intelligence and virtual experiential learning group work within an introductory management course. The research study focused on answering, "How do online students describe the role of emotional intelligence within their introductory management course group work?" A qualitative methodology with a virtual ethnography design used virtual observations and virtual interviews to answer the research question. This methodology and design allow for researchers to focus on the interactions and relationships within virtual communities. The population included students taking an online, introductory management course that required online group work. Homogeneous sampling determined the sample that consisted of college students who were 18 years of age or older, enrolled in an online management course that included a group project. Data analysis occurred within the ATLAS.ti software. Coding identified keywords. Themes emerged that were associated with the dimensions of emotional intelligence and with the virtual setting impact on emotional intelligence. The research findings illustrated that the dimensions of emotional intelligence impacted the group project work. Recommended research would further explore the effect of the virtual setting on the role of emotional intelligence.
