This study examined the associations of age, poverty, and health behaviors on depression among rural African American women. Community engagement was examined as a moderator of the relationship between age and poverty with negative health behaviors in predicting depressive symptoms. The participants of this study were 110 African American women living in rural northeastern North Carolina. Utilizing correlation analyses, this study first investigated the relationships among age, poverty, health behaviors, and depression. The results indicated age was inversely but non-significantly associated with depression, and poverty was associated with greater depressive symptoms. Additionally, lifetime alcohol use was positively and significantly associated with depression. Furthermore, utilizing multiple regression analysis, the study found that community engagement did moderate the relationship between age, poverty, negative health behaviors, and depression.
