The purpose of this multifaceted, mixed methods exploratory study was to investigate factors associated with parent-child communication about sexuality. Three human sexuality experts participated in a focus group to provide feedback on current measures of parent-child communication related to sexuality. Next, five parents participated in a focus group where they discussed: (a) their knowledge of sexuality, (b) how confident they were that they could talk to their children about these topics, and (c) which topics they believed were most important to discuss with children. Based on the responses from the two focus groups, a survey was created. Two sexuality education teachers (grades 7-9) provided feedback before the survey was sent to Unitarian Universalist (UU) parents. The results of an exploratory factor analysis identified a 9-factor model, with parenting self-efficacy related to conversations about sexual health topics emerging as the main factor and explaining 32.3% of the total variance. Therefore, it appears that the development of an updated self-efficacy scale is needed. Parents reported discussing topics such as puberty, sexuality, social media, and the Internet, and healthy relationships the most frequently with their children, while topics such as sex work, sexually transmitted infections, and non-intercourse sexual behaviors were discussed less frequently. Parents answered similarly for the majority of sexual attitude statements and in accordance with the liberal UU faith. Multiple barriers to communication were identified. The results from this dissertation may guide future scale development, inform parent-child communication programs, and be a resource for mental health professionals, as well as other professionals working with parents and youth.
