Thesis (Psy.D.)--Adler School of Professional Psychology, 2018.
Adults who are hospitalized on an inpatient psychiatric unit (whether they are there for anxiety related disorders or not) very commonly experience anxiety due to the nature of the inpatient unit itself, making the development of effective methods to decrease this type of anxiety significant (Chandraiah, Anand, & Avent, 2012). Art therapy uses practices that consist largely of nonverbal techniques that are hands on, and provide a creative expressive outlet that engages different parts of the brain simultaneously during the therapy process (McNamee, 2004). The present research is designed to examine the efficacy of group art therapy on an inpatient psychiatric unit for reducing state anxiety symptoms. State anxiety symptoms were assessed using a pre-post design at three different points during hospitalization: before and after a clinical therapy group (treatment as usual), before and after an unstructured area of downtime, and before and after an art therapy group. The State Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI) was used to assess state anxiety pretest and posttest in the proposed design (Spielberger, Gorsuch, Lushene, Vagg, & Jacobs, 1983). The results of the study showed that art therapy group and clinical therapy group both significantly decreased state based anxiety symptoms, however of the two, art therapy group had a larger effect size. The hour of down time did not have a significant effect on state based anxiety symptoms.
