Co-occurring mental health disorders affect and interact with each other in such a way that makes treatment a very unique challenge. Instead of just treating one condition, an integrated treatment which takes a more holistic approach may become necessary for treating the symptoms of both or multiple disorders. One of the results of not properly treating an alcohol use disorder is the potential for relapse. This project proposed using the integrated model of Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy to treat alcoholics with depression in a 31-day residential rehabilitation facility to not only attain sobriety, but also reduce relapse rates. The purpose of this project is to explore a better treatment modality for decreasing the instance of relapse since the models which are currently being used are not as effective. Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy is considered as a potential intervention to decrease relapse and maintain sobriety when treating co-occurring disorders.
