Whether native born or foreign born, it is beneficial for American students to become English language proficient and to master oral and written English language skids. Communication is central and critical to academic success. Unfortunately there is line statistical evidence and baseline data to design successful educational programs which target the needs of Chinese American students. The bimodality of academic performance for Chinese American students often overlooks and mask their language needs.Subjects--Topical Terms:

The primary objective of the study was to determine the relationship between reading and written expression performance scores and selected demographic variables among eighth grade Chinese students in selected California public school districts. Subjects in the study were 2,232 eighth grade Chinese students in six unified school districts (Fresno, Los Angeles, Sacramento, San Diego, San Francisco and San Jose) during the Spring semester of 1988. Data derived from students regarding their demographic and academic characteristics were gathered from the California Assessment Program (CAP), a state wide achievement test measuring reading and written expression. The Spearman correlation test and the Kolmogorov-Smirnoif test, two nonparametric test, were employed for the analysis of data.

The student information section of the CAP test included socioeconomic levels (SES), English language fluency, time reading and watching television, time spent on homework, the number of written assignments, parents education, gender, and time spent in the school and in the district.

Only three demographic variables, English language fluency, the length of time the student spent in the district, and parental education, were positively correlated with reading and written expression skids.
