Cuba and Taiwan are two non-core societies which share similar historical backgrounds, yet have quite different experiences in their attempts to put an end to agricultural monocultural/bi-crop economies. Their experience poses an important challenge to the neo-classical understanding of economy, which is based on the assumption of the free interplay of market forces through the development of capitalist productive and exchange relations.Subjects--Topical Terms:

520 $a This research is based on a dependency perspective, a sociological alternative to neoclassical economics. The intellectual contribution of the research also lies in expanding the scope of the dependency perspective by incorporating post-revolutionary Cuba and Nationalist Taiwan, two apparently deviant cases which have long been neglected by dependency theorists. Nationalist Taiwan made the transition from an agricultural export economy to a diversified industrial export-led economy. Although important structural changes have taken place within post-revolutionary Cuban society, and the qualitative differences with the pre-revolutionary social formation are substantial, sugar is still the most important connection between the Cuban economy and the world market.
520 $a It is argued that the fundamental difference between these two cases is not one between laissez faire capitalism and state-controlled socialism. Rather, the contrast is rooted in the specific historical, political, economic, and sociological processes through which these two countries are articulated with the world capitalist system. Specific mechanisms of articulation examined include trade, aid, foreign investment, foreign debt, and technology transfer.
