The interactive relationship between migration and socioeconomic development is the major analytical thrust of this study. Although many studies have been undertaken to examine how the two are interrelated, the underlying mechanisms of the interrelationship still remain unclear. Contradictory arguments and findings are common in sociological literature. This study has attempted to propose a more comprehensive approach in migration research, using Taiwan as a case study.Subjects--Topical Terms:

520 $a Analytical results show that Taiwanese economic development (GNP) had a positive and significant effect on the gross migration rate, while the square of GNP had a negative impact on the migration rate. Finding confirms the hypothesis that the relation between economic development and migration follows an inverse-U shaped curve. After controlling other competitive factors, the effects of economic dependency on migration are either statistically insignificant or theoretically contradictory to the supposition of the dependency/world system theory expected. The evidence of Taiwanese migration study suggests that the effect of economic dependency on migration can be mitigated by strong government policies. Finding implies that future migration studies should not ignore the theoretical perspectives advanced by state theory.
520 $a Contrary to the expectations of prevailing theories, the temporal variation of Taiwanese population movement did not have any impact on its economic growth. It suggests that migration by itself may not promote economic development. Migration may only be a facilitating mechanism for the match between labor and capital, which in turn promotes national development.
520 $a A sign test suggests that the population movement in Taiwan was still in the track of concentration. Regression analysis shows that the regional development policies of Taiwan were not successful in inducing potential migrants to remain in less developed regions. However, they were partly successful in reducing the pressure of population concentration in the primate city of Taipei.
520 $a In this study unemployment was found to discourage the population's propensity to migrate. While there was a positive impact of migration on income equality. These findings can be interpreted by the unique cultural characteristics of Taiwanese society. Sociological factors such as the particular ecological condition, Taiwan's traditional values and family structure may all be relevant. It is therefore suggested that the findings of this study should be further validated by further studies of other types of societies.
