This study explored two competing models, diffusion and adjustment, as explanations of the transition of family limitation practice in Taiwan. It makes use of areal-unit data between 1961 and 1980. The diffusion model in this study is divided into two sub-perspectives of demand-side and supply-side, representing the natural process of diffusion from urban to rural areas and organized diffusion implemented through the family planning program, respectively. The adjustment model, on the other hand, includes three socioeconomic variables which are expected to measure the effect of structural changes on the level of family limitation practice. Other factors included in this study are demographic and ethnic variables. The dependent variable is Coale-Trussell's "m", which measures the level of family limitation practice as a function of marital fertility rates of women 20 to 44.Subjects--Topical Terms:

Overall, the demand-side diffusion, measured by distance to urban center, was found to be important in the decade of the 1960s but less so in the 1970s. The supply-side diffusion represented by family planning program inputs, while showing the expected positive associations with m values in the 1960s. This was shown to be due to the tendency of the program to put larger inputs in areas of higher fertility. The adjustment variables presented inconsistent results. Only the level of female education, represented by percent female junior high('+), had a positive, significant, and increasingly important effect on m values. The other factors, including child mortality rate, percent hakka, and percent mainlander, were all found to be consistently important predictors in the regression analyses estimated for this study.
