The present study deals with three MSS in Khotanese, a Middle Iranian language, found in Tun-huang, Chinese Turkestan. They are: P2786 (250 lines) preserved at the Bibliotheque Nationale in Paris, Or8212.186 (80 lines) and part of Or8212.162 (45 lines), both preserved at the British Museum, London. These three mutually related texts belong to the genre of the non-religous, non-literary documents. The first two of these have not so far been fully worked on.Subjects--Topical Terms:

520 $a Chapter I of the Introduction gives a general survey of the Khotanese documents, history of their study, and present problems. In Chapter II, the date of these three MSS is discussed based on the historical information contained in these and other related Khotanese documents.
520 $a The texts offered here are freshly made after the photographs of the originals and make many improvements upon those previously published by H. W. Bailey in Khotanese Texts Vol. II (1954, 2nd ed. 1969) Cambridge. Part of them represents different versions of the same text. They are arranged as a synoptic text.
520 $a A translation of these texts and an extensive philological commentary constitute the rest of the dissertation. In the commentary, emphasis is laid on the study of the parallel passages within these texts and in other documents, so that more convincing interpretations than previously achieved of difficult passages can be established. Passages of these texts quoted and translated in H. W. Bailey's Dictionary of Khotan Saka (1979) Cambridge, are examined in detail.
