Thesis (Ph.D.)--University of Washington, 1982.
This dissertation treats 46 bronze inscriptions associated with the state of Ch'(')i in the Eastern Chou period (770-222 B.C.). The first concern and bulk of the dissertation provides a translation of each text with annotations. The annotations emphasize detailed philological analysis, covering such matters as epigraphy, phonology, grammar, etc. Hand copies of the original graphs, following a grid pattern, are provided, along with modern transcriptions and Old Chinese reconstructions of the text. At this level, the endeavor embraces an attempt to allow the inscriptions to speak for themselves. The next concern centers around the relationship of the inscriptions to the received historical tradition of Ch'(')i. An effort is made to link the inscriptions with this tradition, largely taking the form of identifications of people, places, events, lexical items, etc. Following these links and others, datings for 28 of the inscriptions are tendered. The sections following the translations and annotations contain the discussion of identifications, datings and other special problems related to specific inscriptions. Background information concerning the provenance of the vessel and/or inscription, present-day location, dimensions and the like is presented, when available, in the introductory remarks preceding the translation and annotations.Subjects--Topical Terms:
