His goal was to create a world where everybody could happily fulfill their lives. In other words, his focus was in the physical world. He held up his purpose at the age of 15 and strove until 71, when Yen Hui, his best student, passed away. The death of his favorite disciple shocked him and greatly changed his philosophy. He then began to value metaphysical matters more than earthly matters. In other words, he lost his identity as someone that Heaven had ordained to make a better world. Instead, he began develop his meditation in solitude in order to know who he really was and what he really wanted in life.

This changed his view on people and the world. He used to say that he who holds no rank in a state does not discuss its policies. Now he says that Yong [special character omitted], an outcast, well deserves to be king. He here claimed that people should be judged by the content of their character, not by the birth of their family. Later people summed up his philosophy as "Are kings and nobles given their high status by birth?" [special characters omitted].
