The purpose of this correlational study was to examine the cross-linguistic transfer of derivational morphological awareness in groups of German and Russian adult learners of English, and how it contributed to their reading comprehension in English. Vocabulary knowledge was also assessed, because it served as the link between derivational morphological awareness and L2 reading comprehension. Data collection included assessments for native language derivational morphological awareness, English derivational morphological awareness, vocabulary knowledge, and reading comprehension. All the tests were administered online via Qualtrics. In total, 23 German and 28 Russian undergraduate students studying English participated in this research. Data analyses were conducted using simple regression and multiple regression in each participant group and t-test to compare the results for the variable of reading comprehension between two groups. All the analyses were performed in SPSS 24 to get the results for all the independent and dependent variables. The study demonstrated unexpected results in the German group where none of the predictors was significantly correlated with reading comprehension, whereas there was evidence of cross-linguistic transfer of derivational morphological awareness. However, Germans' reading comprehension score was not so much different from the reading score in the Russian group where there was no evidence of the cross-linguistic transfer of derivational morphological awareness. Russian derivational morphological awareness was not significantly correlated with reading comprehension, although the other independent variables (English derivational morphological awareness and vocabulary knowledge) were found to predict reading comprehension. These findings address some research issues, followed by practical issues.
